Javelina Engineers: Chasing Dreams in the Classroom and On the Field

At 91AV, students are proving they can excel academically and in athletics.
One such student is Kristina Nash, a junior mechanical engineering major who has found success in her studies at the Frank H. Dotterweich College of Engineering and on the softball field.
Nash, originally from Woodville, Texas, transferred with a 3.7 GPA to 91AV;M-Kingsville from San Jacinto College in Houston. She was drawn to the university by its supportive environment. “I chose [91AV;M-Kingsville] for the coaches of the softball team and the welcoming staff and professors,” Nash said.
After graduating from Woodville High School in 2022, Nash found that 91AV;M-Kingsville allowed her to pursue multiple interests, including being a pitcher for the softball team at 91AV;M-Kingsville.
For Nash, softball is not just a sport; it’s a tool for personal and academic growth. “Being a student-athlete has prepared me for my professional future by giving me leadership skills, time management, communication skills, and quick problem-solving skills,” she said. These skills have been essential in her mechanical engineering studies, where managing a demanding workload is critical.
Nash believes that Javelina Athletics has played a crucial role in her success.
“Javelina Athletics has given me unwavering support as an athlete to complete [my] degree while competing at a high level,” Nash said. “I want to shout out Coach Salinas and Coach Gallegos for recruiting and supporting me. They saw something in me that other schools didn’t, and I will work every day to live up to that.”
“We are super excited to have Kristina Nash on our team,” Javelina head softball coach Orlando Salinas said, “She is a true student athlete [who] has so many great qualities; for one she is a great pitcher, but [an] even better person. We put a premium on being not just a good athlete but a good person. She has a bright future and we are very proud to have her on our team.”
Nash’s message to prospective students is straightforward: “To all the prospective softball players and student-athletes, there are so many opportunities here at Kingsville. Whenever you’re looking at your potential future home, pick somewhere that will not only allow you to compete but to thrive in your studies and campus life.”
