Why Global Learning?
As global citizens, it is important to know how to maneuver in our interconnected world. Engaging in a global program will develop the skills and knowledge expected of future leaders in the 21st century workforce. By either exploring our own United States or an international country, you'll get the opportunity to engage with different cultures, connect with diverse peers and explore worldview outside of your own to gain a new perspective. No matter your classification, field of study, or, personal challenges, the opportunity to attend a global program can be a part of your educational journey.
Academic Development - Integrative Learning
Connect your experience abroad to enhance your academic knowledge to one of a global context. Be able to apply these new skills, abilities, theories, and methodologies to advance your own academic goals.
What the Statistics Show: A ten year study across the 35-intuition University System of Georgia found that students had 100% great improvement in GPA post-study away. Students reported having their GPAs rise twice as quickly as a result of going away compared to students who did not. (1)
Personal Development - Intercultural Knowledge & Competence

What the Statistics Show: A German study compared personality development and found that students who studied away showed improvements in five core traits compared to their peers who did not study away: openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and emotional stability. (2)

What the Statistics Show: IES Abroad survey shows that nearly 90% of study away alumni found their first jobs within six months of graduation compared to only 49% of recent college graduates in the general population; study away alumni earned $7,000 more in starting salaries. (3)

The possibilities are endless when it comes to selecting a global program. With a variety of options available, you can choose to attend a program that fits your availability, budget, and needs. Each program type offers a different global experience to help support your academic, personal and professional goals.
Review the information below to learn about each option:
STUDY AWAY PROGRAMS
Study away programs offer A&M University-Kingsville students opportunities to earn academic credit internationally (study abroad) or domestically (study U.S.A.) through the below program options:
- Affiliate Provider Programs - Partner organizations that offer opportunities to independently study abroad at a variety of institutions across the world. Javelinas can study, intern, or volunteer with other U.S. Students.
- Exchange Programs for TAMUK Students - Programs that involve the reciprocal exchange of students between 91AV and partner instructions abroad.
- Faculty-Led Programs - Programs with 91AV credit courses that are taught off-campus by university faculty and travel as a student cohort.
- National Student Exchange (NSE) Program - Provides study away to students at member colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
GLOBAL LEARNING PROGRAMS
Global learning programs provide an inclusive option for A&M University-Kingsville students to earn global skills and competencies without having to attend a study-away program.
- Global Citizens Program - Become a Global Learner, Global Scholar, or Global Leader to enhance your professional skillset and earn a micro-credential/digital badge that certifies your competency in the global learning skills most sought out by employers.
UNIVERSITY-SPONSORED INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL
- International Travel - Any international travel by a student that is sponsored by 91AV for individual course credit or non-credit purposes.
General Eligibility Criteria for Students for Study Away Programs
Below are the main requirements to be eligible for attending a global experience.
- Be in good academic and conduct standing with 91AV throughout the complete process of your study abroad experience.
- Be an enrolled student of 91AV at the time of application and the semester that your study abroad program is held. Certain exceptions may be taken into consideration.
- Have an institutional GPA of a 2.5 as an undergraduate student or a 3.0 GPA as a graduate student to be eligible to apply to the university's Study Abroad Scholarship.
Certain global program options may have additional requirements students must meet to be eligible to attend those programs. Students will need to be aware of any additional criteria they may need to meet prior to the submission of their application.
Study away programs offer students opportunities to earn A&M University-Kingsville academic credit off-campus in either domestic or international locations.
Step 1: Program Planning
The first step OGE recommends is to meet with your academic advisor and inform them of your interest participating in a global program. They'll be able to help you know what semester would be best to attend a program and which courses available on your degree plan are applicable to the experience, if necessary. Your advisor will also be able to inform you of any restrictions or requirements needed to take into consideration when planning for a global program that includes any off-campus learning experiences.
Next, set-up a meeting with OGE to discuss your interest in attending a global program. During this meeting, OGE will work with you on selecting the best program option that fits your academic and personal needs. You can set-up this appointment through Starfish by visiting your advisors page and making an appointment with OGE's program coordinator, Nicolette Dacke, or contacting OGE directly.
Step 2: Application Procedures
To initiate the application process, you will first need to create a profile in the if you haven't already. Once your profile is active, you will need to click the "Apply Now" button at the top of your selected program's brochure page to begin your application.
Once your attendance has been confirmed by OGE, you will need to complete the required forms, payments and trainings prior to your participation in the program. Our office will work with you throughout this process and ensure all procedures are finalized prior to your participation.
