Dr. Sajjad Hussain earned his Ph.D. from the University of Corsica Pascale Paoli, France, in 2011. He was appointed Associate Professor at the 91AV Citrus Center, Weslaco, in 2024. Before that, he worked as a professor in the Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Bahauddin Zakariya University, Multan, Pakistan. With 15 years of experience in horticulture, Dr. Hussain has published over 80 peer-reviewed publications, one edited book, over 40 book chapters, and several conference papers. He has mentored three Ph.D. students and 30 M.Phil. students while serving as a principal and co-principal investigator on various research grants.
His research program focuses on developing and evaluating citrus rootstock and scion varieties for sustainable production and better adaptation to changing climatic conditions. His research focuses on various stages of the entire breeding process, ranging from the management of genetic resources to the selection of novel material for the Texas region. For varieties, the primary targets are fruit quality (of which seedless fruits are an essential criterion for the fresh fruit market), high production, and resistance to certain diseases. For rootstocks, selection focuses on a better performance to citrus greening, phytophthora, and CTV, along with adaptation to the various abiotic stresses (drought, salinity, flood, etc.).
